ANGELIM-PEDRA

Hymenolobium spp. - Leguminosae Papilionoideae

GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS:

Heartwood light yellowish brown distinct from the pale brown sapwood. It has an accentuated fibrous aspect at the tangential figure due to prominence of axial parenchyma, fibers and vascular lines. Grain interlocked, texture coarse, luster lacking and without distinctive odour.

USES:

Civil construction, furniture and others.

ANGELIM-VERMELHO

Dinizia excelsa Ducke - Leguminosae Mimosoidae

GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS:

Heartwood light reddish brown, slightly distinct from the reddish gray sapwood. Distinct growth rings, grain interlocked, texture medium, luster medium and disagreeable odour.

USES:

Civil and naval construction, railroads crossties, posts, turnery and others.

CEDRINHO

Erisma uncinatum Warm. - Vochysiaceae

GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS:

Heartwood light reddish brown distinct from the light gray to light grayish brown sapwood. Distinct growth rings, grain straight to interlocked, texture medium, luster lacking and not distinctive odour.

USES:

Civil and naval constructions, boats, furniture, framing, panelling, boxes and crates, furniture components and others.

CEDRORANA

Cedrelinga catenaeformis Ducke. - Leguminosae Mimosoideae

GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS:

Heartwood pinkish grey not clearly demarcated from the lighter sapwood. Figure with dark vascular lines. Grain wavy, texture coarse, disagreeable odour when wet, disappearing when dried, without distinctive taste

USES:

Carpentry, boats, plywood, sliced veneer, boxes and crates, furniture and others.

CUMARU

Dipteryx odorata (Aubl.) Willd. - Leguminosae Papilionoideae

GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS:

Yellowish brown heartwood distinct from a very pale brown sapwood. Distinct growth rings, grain interlocked, texture medium to fine, luster lacking and not distinctive odour.

USES:

Exterior and interior construction, flooring, sliced veneers, framing, turnery, tool handles and others.

IPÊ

Tabebuia spp. - Bignoniaceae

GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS:

Heartwood dark brownish olive to dark olive, generally uniform, sometimes greenish due to lapachol, distinct from the pale yellow sapwood. Grain interlocked, texture medium, luster moderate or lacking depending on the species, characteristic odour and not distinctive taste.

USES:

Interior construction, musical instruments, doors, window framings and others.

JATOBÁ

Hymenaea courbaril L. - Leguminosae Caesalpinoideae

GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS:

Heartwood reddish brown with dark streaks, becoming dark brownish red, sharply demarcated from the pale brown sapwood. Grain interlocked, texture medium, not distinctive odour and taste when dry.

USES:

Civil construction, framing, fine furniture, tool handles, sport goods, railroad crossties, musical instruments, turnery, automobile and truck bodies, sliced veneers and others.

MAÇARANDUBA / MASSARANDUBA

Manilkara spp. - Sapotaceae

GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS:

Heartwood light red when freshly cut, becoming red to dark reddish brown, distinct from the light pink to pale brown sapwood. Distinct growth rings, grain straight, texture fine and not distinctive odour and taste.

USES:

Civil and naval construction, piers, turnery, boards, musical instruments, flooring, truck bodies and others.

MUIRACATIARA-RAJADA

Astronium lecointei Ducke - Anacardiaceae

GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS:

Heartwood pale pinkish brown to yellowish brown, becoming dark red after exposure to sun light, slightly distinct from the lighter sapwood. Figure with stripes of dark reddish brown to black. Grain wavy or slightly interlocked, texture medium to fine, luster moderate, not distinctive odour and slightly bitter taste.

USES:

Exterior and interior constructions, packaging, doors, fine furniture, tool handles, cabinet work, flooring, musical instruments, decorative objects.

TAUARI

Couratari spp. - Lecythidaceae

GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS:

Indistinct heartwood and sapwood yellowish white to light yellowish brown. Slightly distinct growth rings, grain straight, texture medium, luster moderate, slight odour and slight bitter taste.

USES:

Civil and naval construction, furniture, decorative articles, household utensils, toys, musical instruments, boxes, crates, packaging, curved pieces, cabinet work, sliced veneers, plywood and others.
